Essay #3 Topic

For essay #3 I will be writing about the film, "Angels In America". To give a brief synopsis of the film, its about the relationships between a lot of characters. Its during the period when being gay was something that was done, but very discreetly. It was something that was frowned upon in society. But the story takes place when the AIDS virus is at its peak, especially in the gay community. This was one of the reasons people started to rebel against them. It was even considered the "gay disease". The reason I chose this is because in class we didn't get a chance to cover much on gay rights and I wanted to get more into the issues or at least where they came from. Also this was a play before it became a film and it was a very creative and a well made. It was something that I have seen before and felt it was appropriate to emphasize on it for this assignment. Hope you will enjoy... :)

  1. Wesley - This is a great choice and I agree that the gay rights movement is an important piece to add to our class, one that comes out of the same period as many of the movements we've discussed. As you're thinking about background and context, you do want to keep in mind that the modern gay rights movement really takes off after 1969 with stonewall and that there's a very strong gay community in New York, San Francisco and many other cities in the 1970s before AIDS, so although it's certainly true that people faced a lot of prejudice it's not completely true that people were always closeted at this time.

Look forward to reading more about your texts and your sources.

  2. I didn't necessarily mean closeted I just meant that it was when straight married men will sneak off and do things with other men. Actually I came to that conclusion from the events and characters of the film. So referring to that would I have to research the background of when the neighborhoods became gay friendly? i.e. San Francisco, Chelsea, The Village?
